The small screen takes on a big topic
Outlander, heading in to Season 2, is one of several recent shows to address sexual assault and its aftermath
Viewers watched in horror as “Black” Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) a British army officer in 18th century Scotland preyed on his victim Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) including making him brand himself with an iron before proceeding with an elaborate rape.
“It was very tough, it was pretty intense and I really wanted to do it justice,” Heughan told the Star. “I knew we were making something pretty graphic and pretty intense. It was filmed over a two-week period and there were some pretty long days because we had a lot of prosthetics, but Tobias and I rehearsed the scenes and we really went for it. But this was in the book. The viewer has to understand what happens to Jaime and how he’s affected.”
